North Carolina State University Department of 4-H Youth Development and Family & Consumer Sciences

Harriett Edwards, Ed.D., is an Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist in the Department of 4-H Youth Development and Family & Consumer Sciences at North Carolina State University, providing leadership for Continuing Volunteer Education in a statewide program that engages more than 25,000 youth and adult volunteers annually. Harriett's first-of-its-kind dissertation research investigated critical aspects of effectively engaging episodic volunteers in community-based youth programs. She has been the volunteer administrator of a county-based volunteer program, and has served as President of the N.C. Association of Volunteer Administration. Dr. Edwards has presented at numerous national and international conferences, including the International Conference on Volunteer Administration, the Association for Research in Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Agencies (ARNOVA), and the European Seminar on Extension Education. Harriett teaches graduate level courses in volunteer management at both North Carolina State University and as adjunct faculty at the University of North Carolina - Greensboro. Her work also includes the development of a "Basics in Volunteer Management" training to certify experienced volunteer administrators to teach "Basics in Volunteer Management" classes through North Carolina Community Colleges. Harriet is President Elect (2010) for AL!VE - the Association of Leaders in Volunteer Engagement - is a national membership organization of leaders and professionals in volunteer engagement. AL!VE serves to enhance and sustain the spirit of volunteering in America by fostering collaboration and networking, promoting professional development, and providing advocacy for leaders in community engagement.

John "Jack" Salo, Executive Director
Rural Health Network of South Central New York

Jack Salo is a rural advocate and non-profit executive who has worked in the Southern Tier of New York State for the past 25 years. Jack's experience includes leading health, human service and youth development organizations. As a rural health advocate he works with a wide range of partners to address the root causes of health issues and health disparities in the Southern Tier. Central to this effort has been his support for the continued development of local and community food systems, and linking the health care and health education sectors to this effort. Mr. Salo has administered multiple AmeriCorps Programs over the past ten plus years. In addition to his non-profit leadership experience, Jack has provided consultant services for several non-profit organizations with agricultural missions. Mr. Salo received his BA degree in 1979 and his MS degree in 1984 from SUNY Oneonta. He is a past Chairman of the Chenango County Planning Board, a charter Board Member of the Chenango Land Trust and President of the New York State Corps Collaboration, a state-wide AmeriCorps National Service Program.

Allison F. Alden, Ed.D., Founding Director
Center for Civic Engagement, Binghamton University

Allison Alden was recently appointed the Founding Director for the Center for Civic Engagement at Binghamton University. Through the Spring 2010 semester Dr. Alden held an Assistant Professorship of Practice, Department of Public Administration, College of Community and Public Affairs at Binghamton University. Among her many administrative accomplishments Dr. Alden most recently served as Director and Principal Investigator, Center City Coordination Program, HUD COPC-funded research and outreach grant program; Director, Division of Professional Development and Research at Binghamton University and Co-Director of the Center for Applied Community Research and Development also at Binghamton University. Much of her research has been focused on the development of collaborative community-based efforts to address the needs of marginalized populations. She is currently a consultant with South Central NY Nonprofit Executive Directors Group, Special Projects Committee. Her professional recognitions include a personal invitation to Richard Harwood's Second Annual Public Innovators Summit, August 2007, and the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service 2004-05. She is a frequent conference and workshop presenter and contributor in the fields of college faculty engagement, non-profit management, and community partnerships.
